Get to know me better:

Meet Doctor Selassie

I had eczema for as long as I can remember…

I spent a lot of my childhood nights itching and scratching — it was always worse at night. The eczema was on my face, neck, insides of my elbows and behind my knees, but it would come and go on other parts of my body as well.

My father was a medical doctor and so I was prescribed numerous anti-itch, anti-fungal, antibiotic, and steroid cream. All of them would work for a while and then stop and I would have to move to a different medication.

By the time I was twelve years old, I was diagnosed as having steroid-induced asthma. At that point, even as a tween, I knew that drugs and medication were not for me and at the time, I thought that was what being a doctor was all about.

A couple of years later, on the first day of my freshman year of high school, my father died.

He had been recently diagnosed with colon cancer only 67 days prior and right after my father celebrated his 20th year medical school reunion. My mother said to me, “be prepared, a lot of your father’s classmates are in shock as they just saw him happy and well at the reunion. The funeral will be crowded, some will be flying in from the Philippines and from all over the United States”.

The funeral was indeed crowded. The police had to come to control the traffic in our Baltimore suburb.

However, when we went to the funeral, what we discovered was, yes his classmates were there and to this day I am so grateful for their support, but the hundreds of people who came for the funeral were his patients. I remember some of their words:

“your father was such a kind and caring doctor”
“my mother lost her memory, but she always remembered your father — he was her favorite doctor”
“when I was sick your father could cheer me up with his sense of humor.”

It was then that I made the distinction that the pharmaceutical drugs and creams independent of the healer who was my father.

Fast forward a decade later:

I began Naturopathic Medical School. It was there that I learned how to cultivate the healer within me, that I had inherited from my father. And it was also where I learned about healing without having to rely solely on pharmaceuticals.

I have personally lived through everything that I have taught in my Aging Brilliantly Signature Methoddiet changes, stress management, homeopathy, emotional processing, cultivating my spirituality, working on sleep, and exercise, and movement, using, making, and ingesting herbal remedies.

Through the application of what I learned, my twenty plus year history of eczema was healed.

About five years ago, I was asked to teach a class at the New York Open center called, “Beautiful Skin, Naturally!”. Never would I ever imagine in my past that I would be asked to be an expert on skin and represent “beautiful skin”.

With the healing nature of my medical doctor father, and my own healing and knowledge of Naturopathic Medicine, I hope to serve you.
